Становление национальных приоритетов российского школьного географического образования в XX веке

The article is devoted to the description of the stages of formation of the domestic school geographical education in the XX century, their connection with historical events, educational reforms, the development of geographical science, the activities of the scientific and pedagogical community. The features of the formation of strategic national priorities in geography teaching at three historical stages are revealed: the beginning of the 20th century (1900–1917), the Soviet era (1918–1991), the end of the 20th century (1992–1999).

Currently, there is a growing need for a more precise theoretical justification and the def­inition of a methodology for studying geographical disciplines to optimize the interaction be­tween society and nature, ensuring environmental safety. The specificity of modern education requires the implementation of a new, practice-oriented approach. A historical perspective on the development of scientific research and the training of specialists in the field of geograph­ical science is presented. The article analyzes the scientific and pedagogical activity of the geographical faculty of Kaliningrad State University — Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal Uni­versity on the basis of a retrospective study for 1963—2023. Positive trends and the role of dissertation research in geoecology and oceanology in preparing personnel for scientific and production activities are highlighted. The prospects and directions for the further development of geographical science at Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University are assessed.

The main phases of Oleksandr Zupan's development as a geographer and teacher

The main phasess of life history and formation of scientific work of Professor Oleksandr Zupan, a famous Austrian geographer, climatologist, teacher, editor of the famous geographical journal "Petermanns Mitteilungen" are described. It is shown the contribution to the development of geographical science, Austrian and German school geography whithin the analysis of O. Zupan’s career.Most of his life Oleksandr Zupan lived in Germany, namely in Gotha. His stay in Slovenia in Ljubljana was very long as well. He studied and worked as a teacher in Ljubljana.  In general, we suggest to identify five periods: the first - 1847 - 1869, the second - 1869 - 1877, the third - 1878 - 1884, the fourth - 1885-1907 years, and the fifth - 1908 - 1920 years.

Historical Notes on the Development of Geographic Science in Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

The article traces the development of geographic research in Bulgarian Academy of Sciences since the creation of the Bulgarian Literary Society until today. The purpose of this study is to show that from the time of historical and political vicissitudes in Bulgaria after the Liberation, the Bulgarian geographic science has always been at the height of the public needs and its achievements was highly valued by world geographical community and the Bulgarian state. The development of geographic science after the establishment of the Institute of Geography at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was traced in three conditional periods of development, which shows the strong influence of the socio-political changes in the country on the priorities and objectives of the geographical research.

CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS OF THE GEOGRAPHY TRAINING OF THE COUNTRIES IN THE BULGARIAN SCHOOL

This article explores geography training for the countries in high school, first high school and second high school stage. Content - analysis, conceptual and situational analysis, place and themes, meaning and role, goals and expected results, vertical relationships and activities, number of school hours and new concepts, geographical algorithm for characterization of the country and principles of study, and other methodologies - didactic segments, have been tracked.Didactic models of country training in compulsory and profiled preparation have been made up. Network dependencies and intra-disciplinary synthesis between the studied countries, typical representatives of the region between primary and secondary education for compulsory and profiled preparation, are revealed.Country training covers grades V, VI, VII, IX, X and XI in compulsory and profiled preparation.The educational reform in Bulgaria since 2016 has enacted in geography and economics curricula in all classes of compulsory preparation, with the article focusing on the connection and integration between compulsory and profiled geography preparation of the countries. The processes of expanding, upgrading and deepening the educational content for geography training of the countries by classes, stages and degrees of education are explored.Contemporary trends in the development of geographical science are reflected in the curricula content of profiled geography and economics preparation.Country geography training and territorial differentiation by region in the world are part of modular training 4.The curricula regulates the countries of study by applying the traditional geographical algorithm to characterize a country: geographical location and borders; geopolitical influence in the region and the world; natural resource potential; geo - demographic processes; urban development and urbanization; economic development.Characterization of selected countries in the region is constructed regionally - territorial and typological principle in XI class: Northern Europe (Sweden), Western Europe (United Kingdom), Southern Europe (Spain), Central Europe (Poland), Eastern Europe (Ukraine), Central Asia (Kazakhstan), Far East (Indonesia), Middle East (Iran), Middle East (Israel). Profile training in XI grade promotes the development of students' abilities to reason, discuss, comment and evaluate different ideas and concepts independently, which extends the geographical culture of understanding and reasonable activity in the geographical space.The geography and economics training of the profiled preparation are set out the current and contemporary trends of geographical development - regionalization, ecologization, economization, technology, socialization.The curricula determines the training in regional geography, focusing on the formation of students' skills for: expressing critical thinking, analyzing information from different sources, developing a scientific thesis, choosing contemporary behaviors and exhibiting active citizenship, discussing the basic intra-regional problems, mapping of sub-regions, analyzing information from different sources, developing a scientific question or solving a geographic case.

The Development of Geographic Science in Siberia and the Soviet Far East Over the Last 50 Years (1917–67)

AbstractA review of geographic research on Siberia before the Bolshevik Revolution and during the 50 years of the Soviet period. Current research, centered at the Institute of Geography in Irkutsk, focuses on problems of tayga development, thematic mapping, physical-geographic field-station observations and medical geography.

The First London Professor of Geography

IN compiling a continuous history from fragmentary and unrelated data an author has either to be content with a jerky series of isolated statements or else to fabricate a smooth-flowing narrative by the hazardous process of jumping to conclusions. When one succeeds more by chance than good guiding, as the old Scottish saying goes, all is well; but when the leap in the dark lands one in a bog of error the author lays himself open to severe and not undeserved criticism. Within the last few months I have discovered that in the 'Record of the Royal Geographical Society I830-I930' I made a deplorable fauxpas in attributing totally wrong motives to the action of two eminent naval officers and the Council of this Society in the matter of an appeal from University College for financial help towards the establishment of a chair of Geography. It is a mitigating satisfaction that I am able to make this avowal and tender what I hope will be accepted as an adequate apology to the very gallant naval officer who now presides over our Society. I know that his genial friendliness will soften his professional indignation at the injustice ignorantly done to his predecessors. On p. 40 of the 'Record' I wrote: first Secretary, Captain Alexander Maconochie, R.N., served for six years, and on his retirement to take up more responsible duties abroad the Council recorded its appreciation of his 'sound judgement, even temper, and untiring zeal.' The soundness of judgement could not be expected to stand in all respects the test of the standards of a later generation, and one instance may be quoted in which a different decision might have had interesting results. University College, then styling itself the University of London, approached the Royal Geographical Society with a request for co-operation which is thus recorded in the Council Minutes for 28 September I833: 'Received a communication from the Secretary intimating that the University of London was about to establish a Professorship of Geography and that it has been indirectly intimated to Captain Beaufort that if the Society would bestow a small endowment on the Chair the nomination of the professor would be ceded to it, to which, he, the Secretary, in concurrence with Captain Beaufort had replied that the funds of the Society were inadequate to such a purpose, especially as such a concession to one of the Metropolitan Colleges would warrant a similar claim from the other. Approved.' Thus the action of two naval gentlemen, unauthorized at the time, although approved afterwards, postponed for half a century a discussion of the duty of the Society towards the Universities which might have had a profound effect on the development of geographical science in this country. And, as if this were not already too much, I returned on p. 247 to rub it in once more:
